Who Is This Girl Les, and Why Is She Miserable?
By James Emery Vigh of profbruno.com
In my days as a head usher at Playhouse Square Center in Cleveland, Ohio, a fellow head usher (may he and his wife and family be well) and I would occasionally like to joke around and have fun with the guests that we just helped to seat in the theatre. Sometimes we would even (jokingly) try to sell the programs to the guests for a large sum of money (The programs, also called playbills are,of course, free). Alas, we were never able to sell any... One evening during a performance of Les Miserables, we were up in the mezzanine and decided to stop in front of this already seated couple and have a conversation using a program as a prop. Now, the cover of the program for "Les Mis" features a battered looking and rather forlorn looking young girl in front of the French tricolor. "So why is this little girl so miserable?" I asked my friend. "Well next time the show comes around maybe she'll be a little happier." My friend replied. "In other words, she'll be 'Even Les Miserables'?" I offered. "Well, it may take a little while." My friend said. "So, eventually, there's gonna be this big smile on her face and she'll be 'Not Particularly Miserables At All'?" I asked. "Yep, but that may take quite a long time." He concluded. The guests laughed. We told them that we were serious.

Thanks Poddys. Ya won't believe some of the stuff we pulled there. Bottom line is that we were really into customer service -and that included having fun with the guests (when appropriate -- we couldn't do this with just anyone -- especially if we were working an opera)
This must be one of those times when les is more. Or is it more is Les? Third base... I don't know...... May I have the translator please?

Les is more. More or Les... Thanks for the comment.
Very thoughtful and interesting, Jim. Having fun is what theatre is all about. I'm sure the guest loved it, Keep up the good work. Frederick
