Walking on the Towpath

By James Emery Vigh of profbruno.com

A great and wonderful place to walk, jog, or bike is on the Ohio-Erie Canal towpath. This towpath extends from Akron all the way up to Cleveland.

This towpath is where people using horses and mules used to help canal boat traffic along the Ohio-Erie Canal. Much of the canal is no longer in existence, but the towpath remains. What also makes this route attractive is that the Cuyahoga River winds in and out of the scenery. Occasionally, you can walk on an "island" with the canal on one side and the river on the other.

There are wide stretches where neither the canal, nor the river is visible, but you are either in deep woods, or walking through some historic location. Many of the canal locks are still visible along the towpath.

Lots of wildlife is visible, including a cool looking bird known as the Blue Heron. This species has nesting sites along the canal route.

There are lots of "stations" where you can park your car along the route so you can choose the unique experience that each station route offers - they're all different. These stations all have some sort of restroom facilities.

If you live in the Cleveland-Akron area, and are looking for a unique experience while walking, jogging, or biking, try the Ohio-Erie Canal towpath.
