The Guitarist - Playing as Part of a Team

By James Emery Vigh of profbruno.com

It is very important for a guitarist to remember that playing with other people in a band as part of a team is vastly different than just tooling around by yourself in your living room. You need to learn to work effectively with your fellow band members. This starts with the simple act of listening. If you are doing a "cover" of a pre-existing song, that means you must listen to the recording that you are trying to cover so that you at least know how that song was done originally. It also means listening to each other, and paying attention to what is going on around you. You are not playing in a vacuum, and you cannot just do your own thing whenever you want to.

If you listen, really LISTEN (there's that word again) to song recordings, you will discover that sometimes guitars are featured prominently, sometimes they blend in with other instruments, and sometimes you don't hear them at all. Just because you have that thing strapped around your neck, it doesn't mean that you have to play something over every note of every song. Learn to be appropriate and sensitive to what's going on around you. How you interpret the music is everything. What you do and what you DON'T do both effect the mood of the song.

I love guitar music and even took lessons, back in the 50's. I had difficulty getting my short stubby fingers around the neck. Maybe I should try again and at 73 maybe I could even learn from your website. Good intel.
Have a Happy.
