The Best Book About the Alamo
By James Emery Vigh of profbruno.com
One of my favorite hobbies is reading about historical events. "The Alamo" is a passion of mine. To me the definitive book about the Alamo is by Walter Lord called "A Time To Stand". It is a relatively quick reading book, but it captures the feelings of the participants on both sides like no other book I've ever read on this subject. The book gets its information from letters and diaries from the participants as well as from interviews from the survivors - Susannah Dickinson, wife of the Alamo defender Almeron Dickinson among them. There is also a nice section at the end of the book that discusses the various controversies surrounding the Alamo such as: 1. Did Travis really draw "the line"? 2. Did Crockett surrender or did he go down fighting? 3. How many Mexican casualties? 4. What happened to James Bowie during the siege? It is a fascinating and well written book and is a must read for anyone interested in this subject.
