The 12 Days of Christmas - A Recipient's Point of View

By James Emery Vigh of profbruno.com

The 12 Days of Christmas is certainly one of the beloved Christmas songs. It's one of my favorites.

But has anyone ever considered how it would feel to be the actual recipient of such a list of gifts?

So, in the spirit of humor -- and literal interpretation of the lyrics...

The 5 gold rings is far and above the best gift on the list. Even if you are not a materialistic person, it is a cool gift.

The partridge in a pear tree -- assuming it's a small tree -- could be considered to be a unique and even caring gift, as are the 2 turtle doves.

As for the rest of the birds...

There certainly are a lot of birds in this gift package. For example, the swans a-swimming. Swimming where? About the only place that you could put them would be the bathtub, and you probably wouldn't be able to fit all 7 in it at the same time. You will have to switch them back and forth to ensure adequate swimming time.

Then there are the ladies dancing and the lords a-leaping. It probably will be a good idea for practical, as well as moral reasons to keep the lords away from the ladies.

The pipers piping and the drummers drumming will keep you up all night with their racket causing sleep deprivation issues.

Between the maids a-milking all of those cows, and all of those birds... Imagine the mess. Someone's going to have to clean it up.

Won't the neighbors complain?

And the upkeep of the animals and people -- expensive.

One would have to question the motivation of anyone sending such a list of gifts.

I'm still laughing at your humorous approch to the holiday gift giving.

Thank you. Merry Christmas to you and yours.

The Roman pagans laughed at this song too. Little did they know the Christians were openly singing about their faith without persecution which was severe.

In the early Christian Church when Christians were truly persecuted they used this song to openly praise God.

* 1 Partridge in a pear tree= The one true god revealed in the person of Jesus Christ.
* 2 Turtle Doves= The Old and New Testaments.
* 3 French Hens= Faith, Hope & Charity.
* 4 Calling Birds= The Four Gospels and /or Four Evangelists.
* 5 Golden Rings= The First Five Books of the Old Testament, the "Pentateuch" which contain the law condemning us of our sins.
* 6 Geese A-Laying= The Six Days of Creation.
* 7 Swans-A-Swimming= The 7 Gifts of The Holy Spirit, the Seven Sacraments of the Catholic Faith.
* 8 Maids-A-Milking= The 8 beatitudes.
* 9 Ladies Dancing= The Nine Fruits of the Spirit.
* 10 Lords-A-Leaping= The Ten Commandments.
* 11 Pipers Piping= The Eleven Faithful Apostles.
* 12 Drummers Drumming= The Twelves points of Doctrine in the Apostle's Creed.

I have been truly Blessed to receive such a list of gifts.

Of course understanding Who the early Christians were referring to when they sang "My true Love sent to me" helps enormously in understanding this song. Hint: it's not who the pagans thought it was.
