Stratego - A Great Board Game
By James Emery Vigh of profbruno.com
One of the very best strategy board games in existence is Stratego. Stratego is a 10 x 10 square "capture the flag" strategy game for 2 players. Each player gets 40 pieces representative of army rankings (Field Marshall, General, Colonel, Major, Captain, Lieutenant, Sergeant, Minor, Scout, and Spy). Also included are mines (the kind that go "boom") and of course, the flag. All pieces can move except the mines and the flag. The idea of the game is to capture your opponents flag. It starts off with each person setting up their 40 pieces on their side (10 x 4 squares) of the battlefield in such a way that the other side can't see the rankings on the pieces. Then each person takes turns moving 1 piece at a time. You can challenge your opponent by landing one of your pieces on the same square occupied by your opponent. The highest ranking then wins. Mines kill everybody except "minors" (Only minors can kill mines). Only a spy can kill a field marshal IF the spy strikes first. If 2 pieces of equal rank have a confrontation, both pieces die. Scouts have special movement rules. The game play is pure strategy and tactics. The rankings on your pieces are secret until there is a confrontation with the other player, so you are always trying to outwit and fool your opponent as to where your real attack and/or defense is. It's been a long time since I played this game, but I sure would love to get back to it. |

In all my years, I never heard about the game of Stratego. It certainly sounds like great competition, that would keep two friends enjoying some free time. Good intel. Frederick
