Star Trek 2009 -- A Review

Star Trek (2009) was recently released on DVD and Blue Ray. This highly-touted movie in part concerns itself with the origins of the original Star Trek characters and how they came to be assigned to the starship Enterprise. It stars Chris Pine as James T. Kirk and Zachary Quinto as Mr. Spock. Karl Urban plays a much younger Dr. Leonard McCoy with a verve and passion that reminds you of DeForest Kelley (the late actor who originated the role). In fact Karl Urban could BE DeForest Kelley cloned because of the way he plays the role. He captures every movement and nuance of the original good doctor played by Kelley. Chris Pine does a good job as Kirk, but I was not able to see much of the original personality as played by William Shatner. Zachary Quinto is very credible as Spock. All the other original crew members are played well, but the real shocker here is Uhura as played by Zoe Saldana. Actually let me be clear -- Ms. Saldana is great at the role -- the shocker is what the script does with the role. You need to experience this in its context to understand what I mean. The movie opens with a Federation starship confronting a Romulan ship. This Romulan ship is captained by Nero (Eric Bana) who is revenge driven. On the Federation ship are James Kirk's future parents. In fact Winona Kirk is very pregnant with James. The dad is a flag officer on the bridge. Nero attacks the Federation vessel and puts it in dire straights. The captain agrees to negotiate personally with Nero on the Romulan ship leaving Kirk's dad in charge.
Things get bad. Acting Captain Kirk orders the evacuation of the Federation ship and makes the hard choice of staying on board and keeping Nero occupied as the evacuation commences. As a last resort, being out of power, he decides to ram the Romulan ship sacrificing his life. In the meantime, on an evacuation shuttle, Winona Kirk gives birth to James. Cut to Kansas, U.S.A. years later. We meet James Kirk as a rebellious child and then as a rebellious teenager. He joins Starfleet Academy. In the meantime the half-human/Vulcan child and young man Spock are undergoing their own challenges and issues, but he too ends up in Starfleet Academy. We meet most of the other major characters soon after, except for Mr. Scott who makes his entrance much later. Leonard Nimoy also stars as a Mr. Spock from an alternative universe. It is this idea of alternative universes and the possibilities these universes suggest that is a central theme of this movie. You need to remember this as you watch. Both Nero and Spock (Nimoy) seem to go back and forth between universes and sometimes appear to be in more than one at the same time. If all of this sounds confusing, it is, but you can get through it all quite tolerably if you remember that these alternative universes exists. But in the end you're left guessing and wondering -- Just which universe are we experiencing here? The plot centers around Nero wanting to take bloody revenge on the Federation for destroying his home planet, Romulus. Most of us Star Trek geeks (There. I said it.) remember certain aspects of the history of the main characters -- especially that of Kirk and Spock. This movie has you going "Whoooo?", "Whaaaaat?", "Huhhhhh?" much of the time. Then you remember the alternative universes. |

I never had the opportunity to get involved with star trek.
Had to keep my nose to the grind stone.

I never got into the TV series that much,but I loved the movies. Thanks.
My wife and I saw it on the Big screen first. I thought the way they tied it all together was pure genius. The actors were right on. I loved the Corvette. "don't get a scratch on it" We saw it again when my wife rented the Netflix version and it just isn't the same on the TV. If "in the end you're left guessing and wondering -- Just which universe are we experiencing here?" I think they did a good job with the movie and accomplished their mission.

Yep, they definitely set up the sequel - seemingly not in the universe that the original Star Trek was in. But you know -- both Spocks were in that last scene together talking to each other. Mumble mumble mumble.... Thanks for your reply. Jim
In Science Fiction you can create as many alternate universes as you need providing the money doesn't run out. Spock's last line shows that they have a sense of humor too.
I loved this movie and I am a huge Star Trek fan, even been to a few conventions, yup, my inner nerd comes out. thanks for the great review.
