Playing a Guitar in a Standing Position By James Emery Vigh of profbruno.com If you are a beginning guitarist, did you ever wonder what the proper place on your body the guitar should be worn when standing? Lots of guitarists go for the "cool" look and wear their guitars below the waist - almost halfway to the knee. This may look cool, but doesn't do much to facilitate good technique. Some people (B.B. King was an example) like to wear them fairly high up on the body. The consensus appears to be to wear it about waist high which allows maximum freedom of movement. You also tend to see that guitarists (not all) tend to wear an acoustic guitar somewhat higher than they would for the usually smaller electric guitar. That's due mainly because acoustic (and many jazz guitars) are much more massive and will be harder to play when placed further down the body. So... The best place to play is somewhere around waist high. But the bottom line is to wear your guitar where it's easiest to play for you - not where it's the coolest looking. Looking cool won't help you play better.
