My Favorite Game - Backgammon
By James Emery Vigh of profbruno.com
Almost every Friday,I go over to my buddy's house to hang out. Invariably, we end up playing backgammon. Interestingly enough, we have never played the traditional way - with the stones already prepositioned. Instead we play variations on the game that we learned from a "Hoyle's games" book. Acey-Deucy - This game, as with all of the others starts off with all of the stones in the "hole". The adversaries are on opposite ends. After you roll the dice, you can move either 1 stone the total value of the dice, or 2 stones each one matching an individual die. If an "acey-deucy" (a 1 and a 2) is rolled, after you move for that value, you get to choose your roll - for example "double 6s". After that, you get a free roll. You do not get to roll again if you roll doubles in this game. Dutch - Players are on opposite sides. All of the stones must come out and must be placed in your "home court" before you are allowed to leave your home court. You do not roll again on doubles. Russian - Both players come out on the same side, and go around together to the other side. If you roll "doubles" you move your pieces, but you also must move the "complimentary value" of those doubles. Complimentary values add up to 7. If, for example, you rolled "double 5s", your complimentary value would be "double 2s" (5+2=7). You then must roll again. This is a VERY nasty game. Maybe someday, we will actually play traditional backgammon, but I doubt it.
