Movies I Wish Hollywood Would Make Or Remake

By James Emery Vigh of profbruno.com

Here's my list of movies that I wish Hollywood would either make or remake:

- A movie about the 32 men who rode from Gonzales to reinforce the Alamo during the 1836 siege.

- The battle of Waterloo - a nice 4 hour version

- The siege and fall of Fort Sumter

- The Charge of the Light Brigade

- A movie about John Brown who was one of the catalysts of the Civil War

- A movie about Abraham Lincoln's presidency

- An account of the start of the American revolution culminating with the battle of Bunker Hill (Breed's Hill)

- The French Revolution

- Custer's last stand (the truth, please)

Yeah, they're all period movies - but that's what I'm into.

We could use some good period movies and less futuristic fantasies full of creatures that don't exist.
The history value could be of benifit to our younger generation.

I can tell what genre of movies you like, very much the same as me, historical action epics.

Did you see the 1970's version of Waterloo? It's hard to get in the USA, available in the UK but rarely seen. That is a long movie, with a cast of thousands.

It's about time a new movie was made about the Charge Of The Light Brigade I agree. In fact the Crimean War has hardly been covered at all in the movies. Napoleonic times have I think only been covered with Waterloo, Master And Commander, and the excellent Hornblower and Sharpes series.

Movies they could NOT remake in my opinion include Gettysburg and Zulu. I just can't imagine a better cast, effects or drama if they did.

One movie that I would love to see remade according to the book is War Of The Worlds. They always make it in modern times, whereas I think the naivity of people in Victorian times (as it is originally set in the book) and the onsuing panic and despair would I think make a much better version than the recent Tom Cruise one.

Hi Poddys,

Interesting comment. I have the Russian version of Waterloo in English. It's not much over 2 hours long. The battle itself is rushed and skips over most of the details. It needs to be remade. The Charge of the Light Brigade was clearly made as an anti-war movie, and there was way too much attention made on preliminaries and not enough on the actual battle including the famous charge. The "charge" in this movie seemed more of an afterthought.

Zulu was an excellent movie as was Zulu Dawn. I agree about Gettysburg at least for now. Even considering the length of this movie, it could't adequately cover every single major event in that battle (Wheat field, Peach orchard, Culp's Hill, etc etc etc...) It would take 6 hours to do it right.

I've often wondered why no one ever tried War of the Worlds true to the book in the same period, though I enjoyed the latest version.

Thanks for your comments.

Interesting and imaginative article you ha\e here. I'm a movie buff myself and think these topics could well be turned into good movies -- with the right director and producer, of course. I dunno about the four hour movie though... that's a bit beyond my ability to sit in one place.

Yeah.... 4 hours is a long time. But some movies are worth it. I don't know the exact running time of Lawrence of Arabia, but it's gotta be close to 4 hours. Then there's the Lord of the Rings trilogy.. Ben Hur is 3+ hours long. Remember all of those movies that had "intermissions"? It can be done. We can be taught.

But I agree, it needs the right director, the right screenplay, and the right actors to make it work.

Thank you for your kind words.
Jim
