Leadership - Pulling, Not Pushing
By James Emery Vigh of profbruno.com
When you are in charge of a group of people, either through work, a club, or a volunteer organization, your challenge is to get all of these people thinking "on the same page" and working with maximum effort. What's the best way of doing this? Well, you could rule by intimidation - "My way or the highway". I have met many managers who believe strongly in this. You can, in fact, in a work environment, get people to work harder - in the short run. What you WON'T do is make it work in the long run. Your people won't respect you and they won't go out of their way for you or your organization. Your best people will leave at the earliest opportunity. Even in short run scenarios people won't go the extra mile for a tyrant. If you want to get the most out of your people, you must treat them as valuable members of your team. A team is a collection of individuals trying to achieve the same goal. So first, that goal must be clearly defined. Secondly, even though you are in charge and are responsible for your teams' results, it is better if your team members feel that they can provide input and suggestions. If you are operating under a specific mandate and other options are not possible, then you must still listen to what your team members have to say within reason. Make them feel involved. Be nice. You get better results from honey than you will get from harshness. You gotta do what you gotta do when you gotta do it, but be nice about it. Most importantly, you must also never ask anyone to do anything that you won't do yourself. Lead from the front - you can't lead from behind. This can be characterized as "pulling" as opposed to "pushing". Your team is more likely to follow a leader, than when being pushed by a hypocrite. |
