Kids Guitar -- Wanna Be an On-Stage Performer?

Hey dudes and dutettes! Didja ever think about wanting to be one of them thar guitar players that you see on MTV and VH1 or even on Disney? Don't we all? It is a bit of a journey to get to that high place - that holy of holies for a guitarist. Being good at "Guitar Hero" is cool, but it won't get ya there. You have to be lucky besides good at what you do. But you can still make a good living playing on a stage whether or not you get a chance to be on TV. So whadaya have to do? Start out by making sure that you know a bunch of chords and can switch back and forth clearly and on time. Somewhere while you're doin' this start playing with other people. Play with other guitar players -- especially those that are better than you if you can hook up with them. Play with keyboard players and bass players and drummers. Form your own band! Play with other musicians. Play with other musicians. Play with other musicians. Did I mention play with other... Oh yeah... I did. But I can't say it enough. Because... When you play with a guitarist who is better than you are, you will learn more than if you play with someone who is at or below your level. That is NOT to say that you shouldn't play with those who are at or below your level. ABSOLUTELY DO THAT! But seek out those who are better than you and learn what they know. Do it as much as ya can! When you play with other kinds of musicians (keyboards, bass, drums, fiddle, horn, whatever...), you learn how to play with those types of instruments. You can't learn that from a book or video. When you are a member of a band, you are a member of a team, and you learn how to play AS a member of a team. You can't learn that from playing by yourself in your family room. Got it? Keep learning. Keep studying. Keep getting better. Don't be stubborn! Learn to play all styles of music. The more that you know, the more valuable you are. You give yourself more chances. When you're old enough, play in wedding/party bands. Play in club bands. Okay so it's just a wedding band... But ya gotta start somewhere. You're on stage even though you're not exactly playing the kind of music that you may want to be playing. Then look for opportunities. And don't worry about being a star for heaven's sake. Good bands need good back-up musicians. Back-up musicians are the ones who "make it happen" in the first place. Keep your eyes and ears open for auditions (bands looking for people will "audition" -- that is try out -- them to see how well they play). Do this even if you know that you don't have a ghost of a chance to make it. You will be gaining experience and you will be meeting people in the music industry. Keep putting yourself in front of people while mastering your guitar. Sooner or later, you will get a "chance" or even several "chances". Then, it's up to you. It's possible.

Good intel. I'm sure that playing with other musicians is key to getting started on an on-stage career.

Thanks June. Yeah.. It's essential.
So that's what I did wrong when I was in a rock 'n Roll keyboard player back in the late 60's and early 70's. I should have looked for people who played better than I did to play with.  Any chance professor Noteworthy could help me learn to play the lead guitar solo on the video on Musical song to memorise the books of the Bible between the Old and New Testaments? Or should I just give Carlos Santana a call?

The song appears to be in the key of C. The intro and solo are all based off the C major scale. You COULD give Carlos a call, but it's possible that he just might be busy. I didn't realize you knew his number...

Excellent advice. I love jamming with musicians and riding the wave. Chemistry with a band is a great feeling. Awhile back we were in an airport and I saw Carlos Santana hurrying to catch his plane. He was carrying his guitar in a soft case...
