Kids Guitar -- Rhythm 8 - Three-Quarter Time
By Professor Bruno Noteworthy of profbruno.com
Hi everyone! All of the stuff that we've been learning so far has been in four-four (4/4) time. Now we're gonna learn about three-four (3/4) time. It ain't no big deal here folks. Instead of counting to four on each measure, just count to three. 1 2 3 1 2 3 1 2 3... See the picture of the exercise below. Three-four time is also known as "waltz time". A waltz is a type of dance. You don't see it much in popular music these days, but you will run across it every once in awhile. Now... the exercise... Didya notice that there are no whole notes in this thing? That's because there CAN'T be. Why? Because a whole note has 4 counts. Too many counts. You can't fit four counts into a three count measure. Never. But you got half notes, quarter notes and eighth notes that CAN fit. Try playing this thing using only one chord at first. Once you get used to it, start switching chords -- use all of 'em. Little by little, increase your speed. Now for the pizazz. We're gonna do the same kind of stuff that we did in four-four time. Look at the fourth measure - the one that has all eighth notes. The pattern looks like this: D U D U D U 1 2 3 4 5 6 Start with only one chord. First accent only on 1. Start off with only a slight accent and work your way up until your accent has some oomph. Little by little increase your speed. Next accent on 1 and 3. Same rules apply. Next accent on 1, 3 and 5. Again same rules. Now accent on 6 only. That's an up-strum remember. Same rules. When you get used to it, start switching chords. Now, again, three-four time is not as popular as four-four time. But it is worth learning. There are other types of time "signatures" too. You will see them later on down the road. For now, don't worry about it. You just need to know that they exist. So... Keep practicin' Professor Bruno Noteworthy
