Kids Guitar -- Rhythm 10 -- Alternate Pick and Strum
By Professor Bruno Noteworthy of profbruno.com
Hi Gang! What we're gonna talk about now is something I call the "alternate pick and strum". Remember the "pick and strum"? That's where you first pick the root bass note of a chord, then follow it by strumming the chord. To review, here are the root bass notes for the chords pictured below: A chord -- the 5th open string C Chord -- the fifth string where your 3rd finger is D chord -- the 4th open string E chord -- the 6th open string G chord -- the 6th string where your 2nd finger is Am chord -- the 5th open string Dm chord -- the 4th open string Em chord -- the 6th open string The "alternate pick an strum" starts the same as the "pick and strum". First pick the root base note and strum one or more times, but then... Pick a different note before you strum a second time. These are the alternate "picks". Try these: A chord -- the 6th open string C chord -- the 3rd open string D chord -- the 5th open string E chord -- the 5th string where your 2nd finger is G chord -- the 4th open string Am chord -- the 6th open string Dm chord -- the 5th open string Em chord -- the 5th string where your 2nd finger is Let's use the A chord as an example: First pick the root bass note, then follow with a down strum. Then pick the alternate note, then follow with a down strum. Practice this several times to get the hang of it. Next pick the root bass, and follow with a down-up strum. Then pick the alternate, and follow that with a down-up strum. As always, start slowly. Be as accurate as you can. As you get used to it, pick up your speed until you can play it fairly quickly. Now do the same thing with the rest of the chords. This is the kind of sound that you hear a lot in older country music, but also once in a while in pop music. It's worth learning even of you don't like country music. If nothing else, this style helps you with your pick control -- and that's a good thing, right? This is just one more color in your crayon box of rhythm styles that you can use when you want to. Are ya practicin' yet? Get movin'... Professor Bruno Noteworthy
