Kids as Guitar Students - Should They Learn to Read Music
By James Emery Vigh of profbruno.com
There is some controversy among guitar teachers involving whether or not teaching kids how to read music is necessary or even essential. My opinion as a guitar teacher and author of guitar method books is that it is definitely not essential. Certainly not in this day and age. Look - I think the idea here is to promote music and the playing of a musical instrument. Most kids today, as well as a lot of adults look for instant gratification in all that they do. Learning how to read music in the beginning is tedious, and guitar students, especially kids cannot see how learning this skill will get them "on stage playing in a band", or "look at me - I can play [insert song name]". Many people consider the guitar as one of the "cool" instruments". "Buzzing on the B string" does not personify "cool". Learning how to read music is skill that is necessary if a guitarist wants to be a studio musician, or wants to be a pit musician. Any guitarist who knows how to read will also have valuable skills that could be helpful in a band situation. In other words, it doesn't hurt to know how to read. A guitar teacher though, I believe, should at first give the student, especially if its a kid, something to "hang his or her hat on" first. Then determine where the student wishes to go as far as playing the guitar is concerned, and teach accordingly. Any serious student will be able to eventually figure out whether or not learning how to read is necessary.
