Kids - and Musical Instruments

By Bruno Noteworthy

Playing a musical instrument is a joy. But learning HOW to do so often is all to often not particularly joy-filled. This poses a problem when trying to teach kids - especially now in this age of immediate gratification. It is hard to get and keep kids' attention. Couple that fact with knowing that learning to play a musical instrument takes a certain amount of practice, and devotion. Practicing is not inherently fun, in fact it is usually tedious.

I believe that you have to first capture kids' attention. Secondly, I believe that kids should learn things in the beginning that shows them that they are actually playing something that they can use right from the get-go (up to a point). Thirdly, the very idea of learning to play any musical instrument should be promoted - heavily and passionately. Music is THE universal language that crosses all borders of race, creed, religion, age ,and politics. It is learned logically, but played emotionally. Lastly, make it as much fun as possible - on their level.

All of us involved in teaching music should try to figure out ways to get kids more and more involved in learning how to play musical instruments

I fully agree to the fact that at the beginning stages it is CRUCIALLY important to turn the music lessons into a fun game in order to get kids interested in the very process. However, recently it seems to me that parents' efforts, even thoroughly applied, are not enough. I'm strongly convinced that SCHOOLS are to put more focus on children's musical education, even if those are not specialized establishments.
