Health Care Reform
By James Emery Vigh of profbruno.com
I have been watching with growing dismay the so-called debate over health care reform. As I am writing this, I just heard a quote from our President accusing the Republicans of deliberately trying to torpedo "reform" so that they can influence mid-term elections. The Speaker of the House, and others, have portrayed concerned citizens at town hall meetings as being astro-turf and other disparaging terms. If you are a member of the left, it's perfectly OK to disrupt public meetings, perfectly fine to issue personal attacks on those that they disagree with AND their families, and perfectly wonderful to shout down opposition and label them as Nazis or worse. This is called freedom of speech by concerned citizens. If you are on the right, however, it's called "hate speech". The democratically controlled congress along with the president may end up ramming a "public option" through Congress simply because they have the votes to do it - no matter what their constituents feel. The current bill itself? Even lawyers can't understand it completely. There are lots of fears that have been generated because of this. We do know that it will cost lots and lots and lots of money - adding to our deficit. Our government hasn't proven that it can run ANYTHING without problems. Look at the U.S. Postal Service. Look at Social Security (going broke). Look at Medicare and Medicaid - Many doctors hate them because they don't get paid adequately. It seems to me that we can do a lot to "reform" health care by doing two simple things that won't cost the taxpayer a single penny: 1. Allow interstate competition among health insurance carriers. 2. Tort reform Competition tends to bring costs down. Tort reform will reduce the costs of crippling malpractice insurance that are passed down to the patients. Doctors go through a lot to even BE doctors. It takes years and a lot of money to set up a practice. It's hard to get new doctors into a system where making even a decent living is difficult. Doing these two simple things would be easy. But... No. We have to sit here and witness this drama and even take part in it. We will have socialism driven down our throats whether we like it or not. Our representatives in Congress are not representing us. In my opinion, it's all about power, nothing more. We are considered to be too stupid to know what we really want or need. They must do it for us because they know better. Will this country descend into socialism? There are some that would welcome that. I would not. |
