Guitar Tablature - A Good Thing?

By James Emery Vigh of profbruno.com

Guitar tablature is a method used to teach guitar students actual songs. The student does not need to know how to read music.

Tablature is a literal horizontal depiction of the neck of a guitar. It has 6 lines - one for each string. The bottom line is the low "E" string, and the top line is the high "E string.

E --------------------------------------------
B --------------------------------------------
G --------------------------------------------
D --------------------------------------------
A --------------------------------------------
E --------------------------------------------

Numbers and symbols are placed on this thing. What the numbers do is tell the reader which fret on the guitar is fingered for that particular string.

I'm not going to get into a tutorial here. There are tons of great places on the internet that teach the skill of reading tablature. But is learning this skill a good thing?

Yes! It is a really good way to learn how to play your favorite song. All that it takes to be able to learn tablature is a rudimentary knowledge of the guitar. It may be a little tedious at first, but once you get used to it, you'll be hooked.
