Games - Space Invaders

By James Emery Vigh of profbruno.com

I remember (when I was a LOT younger) a game that I used to play a lot - Space Invaders.

As I remember it (and the details may be a bit hazy), you were given this gun thingy that you were able to move laterally back and forth on the bottom of the screen. You had to shoot these creatures that came out of spaceships at the top of the screen. They came down in droves and you just had to keep killing them. If one landed on your "gun" you were dead. For a quarter, you usually got 3 tries. The better you got at shooting these creatures, the more creatures came down at you, and the faster they came down.

I used to play in an acoustic duo back then, and on our breaks, instead of chasing after girls we would play this stupid game. The club had a sit-down version. Sometimes the owner of the club had to pry us away from the table to get us to go back on stage. It was a very addictive game and I spent a lot of quarters on it. I never met any girls at that club, but I did get good at Space Invaders. Priorities.

I don't remember Space Invaders as I was probably knee deep in work during that time frame. Sounds like it was very addictive. Back in the 50's, the big rage was pinball machines also very addictive and expensive for poor teenagers.
Keep up the memories.

Ya know... A good pinball machine is STILL addictive. In the 70's I contributed to the economy massively on those machines.

I should be congratulated, indeed.

Thanks for your input as always.

I saw Space Invaders, but I didn't have enough time to play on the machines in public. In the mid 60s I was already working on computers (mainframes) repairing and later programming them. And, in the 70s I was still working on them.

Ah... Someone who knew how to keep his priorities straight... I figured, you know, that I was doing my part in contributing to the local economy. Uh huh.
