Civil War Reenactors
By James Emery Vigh of profbruno.com
I recently had the good fortune to witness a Civil War reenactment at Hale Farm and Village in the Cleveland area. I got there early anticipating a huge crowd waiting to get in. To my surprise, this was not the case - but one of the Union army "camp followers" spotted me and let me in and invited me to wander around. Because of her kindness, I got to witness a regimental mustering (Union - an Ohio regiment), a mail call (Union), and a Confederate close-order drill. All of this was done in character. These people are serious about what they do. Later, once they were officially "open", I met Abraham Lincoln, Robert E. Lee, listened to a regimental sized fife and drum corps, and saw a Confederate cannon firing demonstration (VERY loud). That afternoon, there was a skirmish between the two forces, followed by a full-fledged pitched battle. There were only about 200 total reenactors in this battle, but it was enough so that you could see how battles were fought at that time. If you're a history buff, especially Civil War, you will have a good time going to an event such as this. It seems a bit nerdy, but it is actually quite a lot of fun. |
