Backgammon Strategies - Russian
By James Emery Vigh of profbruno.com
One of my favorite variations of the game of Backgammon is known as "Russian". To save space here, I need to make an assumption that the reader is familiar with the basics of Backgammon, or this would be a small book. In this game, all of the stones start off "in the hole", and both players come out of the hole on the same side. This game also features what is called "complimentary doubles". Complementary doubles add up to the number seven. What this means is if you should roll, for example, double 4s, you must first move any combination of stones "4 4s" (you get double the value of the die). After you complete this, you must move the "complimentary" value - in this case "4 3s" (4+3=7). Then, you must roll again. The object of the game is to get all of your stones all the way around the board and then "home" before your opponent does. You may not roll any of your stones into "home" until all of your stones are in the home court (the last quarter of the board). Because both you and your opponent start off on the same side, you are faced with some unique strategic possibilities. One of my favorite tactics (if the dice are kind) is to create a slow moving "block" of either 4 or 5 double stones in a row. This forces your opponent to roll 6s or 5s to get by you. Once those stones are by you, and if your opponent keeps rolling lower numbers, those stones frequently end up in bad position in the home court. If you can stack up your opponent in the lower part of the home court, he will have to roll a whole bunch of 1s or 2s to get home and win. The trick becomes one of maintaining that block of 4 or 5. You WANT to let your opponent through your block - but slowly - forcing him to hopefully stack up in unfavorable positions in the home court. You are then behind his stones in power in a position to either knock him off, or be in better positions in the home court.
