A Rags to Riches Story (Kinda Sorta)
By James Emery Vigh of profbruno.com
One of my joys in life is playing on the worship team at my church. Several years ago, I had equipment stolen. Thieves broke into the church one night and took all the sound equipment, a bass guitar, and my Les Paul Custom guitar, my Guild acoustic guitar and my amplifier. The Les Paul was a 1970 model and was a great guitar. Unfortunately, at the time I was young and stupid and "customized" it. So it wasn't an "original" that got stolen. Well, I was devastated. I no longer had any equipment, but I discovered that all of it was covered in my home owners policy - so I got a settlement check. Good news, right? It gets better. I sauntered down to Guitar Center here in Cleveland with my settlement money, and asked to look at their Les Pauls. I could not find one that I wanted that "felt right". So the salesman hands me this beautiful cobalt blue PRS (Paul Reed Smith). At that time, I knew nothing of these guitars. It felt wonderful. Not only did it play like my old stolen Les Paul Custom, it weighed half as much. I wanted it. "Wait..." said the salesman. He comes back a moment later with a green (I guess you can say tiger stripe) PRS, and says "Try this one". I loved that one too. He told me that the one that I was holding (the green one) was a "10" - which means that the finish was considered to be perfect. He ALSO said that this "10" was accidentally shipped to them as part of a shipment of regular PRSs, and that he could sell it to me for the same price. Talk about being at the right place at the right time. It turned out that I was able to replace all of my stolen equipment - and - I ended up with even better equipment than before. |
